crowdstrike: hot take 1
It's too early in the news cycle to say anything truly smart, but to sum things up, what I know so far:
there was no "hack" or cyberattack or data breach*
a private IT security company called CrowdStrike released a faulty update which practically disabled all its desktop (?) Windows workstations (laptops too, but maybe not servers? not sure)
the cause has been found and a fix is on the way
as it stands now, the fix will have to be manually applied (in person) to each affected workstation (this could mean in practice maybe 5, maybe 30 minutes of work for each affected computer - the number is also unknown, but it very well could be tens (or hundreds) of thousands of computers across thousands of large, multinational enterprises.
(The fix can be applied manually if you have a-bit-more-than-basic knowledge of computers)
Things that are currently safe to assume:
this wasn't a fault of any single individual, but of a process (workflow on the side of CrowdStrike) that didn't detect the fault ahead of time
[most likely] it's not that someone was incompetent or stupid - but we don't have the root cause analysis available yet
deploying bugfixes on Fridays is a bad idea
*The obligatory warning part:
Just because this wasn't a cyberattack, doesn't mean there won't be related security breaches of all kinds in all industries. The chaos, panic, uncertainty, and very soon also exhaustion of people dealing with the fallout of the issue will create a perfect storm for actually malicious actors that will try to exploit any possible vulnerability in companies' vulnerable state.
The analysis / speculation part:
globalization bad lol
OK, more seriously: I have not even heard about CrowdStrike until today, and I'm not a security engineer. I'm a developer with mild to moderate (outsider) understanding of vulnerabilities.
OK some background / basics first
It's very common for companies of any size to have more to protect their digital assets than just an antivirus and a firewall. Large companies (Delta Airlines) can afford to pay other large companies to provide security solutions for them (CrowdStrike). These days, to avoid bad software of any kind - malware - you need a complex suite of software that protects you from all sides:
desktop/laptop: antivirus, firewall, secure DNS, avoiding insecure WiFi, browser exploits, system patches, email scanner, phishing on web, phishing via email, physical access, USB thumb drive, motherboard/BIOS/UEFI vulnerabilities or built-in exploits made by the manufacturers of the Chinese government,
person/phone: phishing via SMS, phishing via calls, iOS/Android OS vulnerabilities, mobile app vulnerabilities, mobile apps that masquerade as useful while harvesting your data, vulnerabilities in things like WhatsApp where a glitched JPG pictures sent to you can expose your data, ...
servers: mostly same as above except they servers have to often deal with millions of requests per day, most of them valid, and at least some of the servers need to be connected to the internet 24/7
CDN and cloud services: fundamentally, an average big company today relies on dozens or hundreds of other big internet companies (AWS / Azure / GCP / Apple / Google) which in turn rely on hundreds of other companies to outsource a lot of tasks (like harvesting your data and sending you marketing emails)
infrastructure - routers... modems... your Alexa is spying on you... i'm tired... etc.
Anyway if you drifted to sleep in the previous paragraph I don't blame you. I'm genuinely just scratching the surface. Cybersecurity is insanely important today, and it's insanely complex too.
The reason why the incident blue-screened the machines is that to avoid malware, a lot of the anti-malware has to run in a more "privileged" mode, meaning they exist very close to the "heart" of Windows (or any other OS - the heart is called kernel). However, on this level, a bug can crash the system a lot more easily. And it did.
OK OK the actual hot lukewarm take finally
I didn't expect to get hit by y2k bug in the middle of 2024, but here we are.
As bad as it was, this only affected a small portion of all computers - in the ballpark of ~0.001% or even 0.0001% - but already caused disruptions to flights and hospitals in a big chunk of the world.
maybe-FAQ:
"Oh but this would be avoided if they weren't using the Crowdwhatever software" - true. However, this kind of mistake is not exclusive to them.
"Haha windows sucks, Linux 4eva" - I mean. Yeah? But no. Conceptually there is nothing that would prevent this from happening on Linux, if only there was anyone actually using it (on desktop).
"But really, Windows should have a better protection" - yes? no? This is a very difficult, technical question, because for kernel drivers the whole point is that 1. you trust them, and 2. they need the super-powerful-unrestrained access to work as intended, and 3. you _need_ them to be blazing fast, so babysitting them from the Windows perspective is counterproductive. It's a technical issue with no easy answers on this level.
"But there was some issue with Microsoft stuff too." - yes, but it's unknown if they are related, and at this point I have not seen any solid info about it.
The point is, in a deeply interconnected world, it's sort of a miracle that this isn't happening more often, and on a wider scale. Both bugfixes and new bugs are deployed every minute to some software somewhere in the world, because we're all in a rush to make money and pay rent and meet deadlines.
Increased monoculture in IT is bad for everyone. Whichever OS, whichever brand, whichever security solution provider - the more popular they are, the better visible their mistakes will be.
As much as it would be fun to make jokes like "CrowdStroke", I'm not even particularly mad at the company (at this point - that might change when I hear about their QA process). And no, I'm not even mad at Windows, as explained in the pseudo-FAQ.
The ultimate hot take? If at all possible, don't rely on anything related to computers. Technical problems are caused by technical solutions.

☕️ + vocal range
Playing with the different vocal registers is really important for range stuff. Almost everyone talks in the modal register, which means almost everyone has had heaps of unintentional practice with only one of the four registers. To go up you'll want to play with the falsetto register and the whistle register, to go down you'll want to play with vocal fry. My view is that strengthening one register tends to help strengthen the others as well. I spend a fair amount of time singing by breathing in instead of out, too, because it's another aspect of the voice that I think is under-explored and which might be unexpectedly fruitful.
My approach to vocal stuff generally is that if I can make a sound consistently and comfortably, it is a good sound — regardless of how it sounds. Yay for safe sounds! Whether a given sound is musically useful in an unamplified choir setting, or after digital editing and filtering? I don't know, those are different questions.
I'm not sure how much I can help as far as finding a register for the first time is concerned, so much of it is attempted mimicry before eventually stumbling into and coming to know it somatically. Typical explanations of the registers posit vocal fry as the lowest, sort of crackly, modal as the normal voice you always speak in, falsetto as higher and softer, and whistle as, just, so high and shrill. The registers are generally super flexible in how they sound, though, so those explanations are a starting point with limited uses.
I find that if you can manage a squeak or other uncontrolled sound at a given pitch or in an unfamiliar register, then you can slowly build towards more stability and flexibility there as well. Sometimes there's this sensation of... hang on, I know that I'm really close to singing this note but nothing is coming out. So not being afraid of non-phonation is also useful? It lets you revisit or stay in that feeling while slowly reconfiguring the vocal apparatus until something happens.
To strengthen a vocal register, you must spend time singing in that vocal register. I typically do arpeggios in the given register on a variety of vowels and on m's and n's and ng's and z's at a variety of volumes. I like to try and take each register as high as it can go and as low as it can go; they tend to overlap, which is fun. I like to try to talk in ever higher falsettos and ever lower vocal fries, hopefully eventually in the whistle register as well, because talking requires a lot of coordination that a plain vowel does not. That's useful!
If you can't do arpeggios in a given register yet, just finding one note and returning to it periodically is good. Then try to find another note, either at a jump or by sliding around. Accumulate them bit by bit.
Singing as quietly as possible is also handy, I like to sit with an audio spectrograph in front of me (I use an android app called spectroid) and then I try to produce a note that just barely rises above the ambient background noise. Often I overshoot! But that's okay, I try again. Using an audio spectrograph also lets me see the volume of the overtones as compared to the fundamental frequency, which could be an in for overtone singing if I wanted it to be.
Inhaled singing is really useful for singing lower. Inhaled, I can sing an A0. I also suspect that spending time down there, singing inwards, has helped my vocal fry develop more stability and merge a bit better with the modal voice, so my exhaled range is able to go lower as a result. There's an identifiable note in my vocal fry! It's not just a big swathe of amorphous pitches anymore!
Curiously, I haven't really learned any songs. I just do... this. I recommend tolerant roommates, singing when the house is empty, or singing on walks away from people, or soundproof rooms. Truly, I wish I had a soundproof box to scream and boop and blep in. Then I could more comfortably mess about with distortion, too :3
If anyone has more questions on vocal stuff I would be very happy to try and answer!

I work in IT part-time and am a CS major going into software engineering. I consider myself an incredibly patient person that's pretty slow to anger, and am down to sit down and figure out a problem for hours.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, makes me angrier than tech issues.
If you don't have a love-hate relationship with computers in that position, idk how you cope. There's something about literally banging your head again your keyboard trying to figure out what the fuck is going wrong that humbles a woman, and nothing as utterly infuriating as this box of wires and binary sits unmoving, uncaring in front of you, but yet still taunting you.
The worst is when it was your fault. You installed something wrong, the logic of your code was off, or maybe you simply mistyped. No matter. It laughs at you all the same. Laughing at you from the intangible network of code and microprocessors that comprises its being. Even though its body and brain have been charted out, true understanding takes decades, almost as a doctor to the human form. Even then, the human body stays relatively the same. Diagnosis is difficult for both, yes, and gaps of knowledge remaining for each, but the being of a computer will remain alien. Compact forms that are neat and tidy. Boxes the size of dogs and heavy as one too. Server farms with sprawling tentacles. I work with the wifi and ethernet for my job, and the data closets that hold the switches look less like machines, and more like a plant that has rooted and infested the entire building with its vines.
Each machine is different, and they don't stop multiplying and evolving, forever changing, faster than we are able to comprehend. The body and brain evolve at speeds unheard of, blueprints and documentation unable to keep up. Linguistics shift, forms morph, it ingrains itself so deeply into our lives and yet we still struggle to understand it and the problems they bring us.
I'm working on a project now. Refurbishing an old Android app so that it can be used once more. The old developer isn't with the company anymore, and he neglected to write any documentation. It seemed simple enough: just fix it up. It just took in forms, and allowed the user to fill out the info. Simple enough. The thing to remember is complexity to you and to a machine are two different things. Your interaction may be simple, but that's because the support structure you have is already there, your brain hardwired to learn. The computer requires more, something more akin to neurosurgery, if you will, to add the necessary abilities to its routine. And so much must be added.
Folders in folders. Files thousands of lines long. Errors and warnings popping up in the interpreter. Depreciated. Unsupported. Code hopeless out of date yet ingratiated so deeply as if a tumor. This was all written less than a decade ago. Evolution, as I said. Routines pointing to methods pointing to classes as the logic wove and intertwined, and I remain helpless to untangle it. I spend hours reading through, trying to understand, and researching how to bring this back to life, and for every file I open, the deeper the program runs and deeper the pit in my stomach drops.
The one problem with the neurosurgery comparison is there is an implication of precision. Measured, delicate cuts with the steadiest of hands. That's not what coding is. No, coding is more like a lobotomy. An unethical experiment. You can plan. You can try to plan meticulously, but breaking shit and flinging mud at the wall to see what sticks is and will remain a fundamental part of the process. You will poke and prod, delete and add, test and retest as the program screams exceptions and crashes, and you will do it all over again until it obeys. Trial and error.
So yes, I relate to Colin. Pulling wires out, cursing at the errors, and wishing that the system had better documentation comes with the territory. But for all your tinkering, your insults, your intrusions, your imprecise cuts that are more like stabs leaving large gaping wounds, what happens when a computer, with wires more akin to nerves, that can truly feel your experimentation suffers through that indignity? All I can say is you should be very, very afraid.
I'm fine, btw.
I'm loving all the IT people going "No, no, Colin's behavior is perfectly normal."
It's like the opposite of all the archivists yelling at Jon

Navigating the App Store: Tips for Successful App Launches
Tumblr media
The culmination of months or even years of development effort often comes down to a critical moment: the app store launch. Even the most brilliantly conceived and expertly crafted applications can falter at this crucial juncture without proper planning and execution. The world of Mobile App Development doesn't end with functional code—it extends into the complex ecosystem of app marketplaces where millions of products compete for user attention. Navigating this landscape requires strategic thinking, meticulous preparation, and an understanding of the unique dynamics that influence visibility and adoption in these digital marketplaces.
Understanding App Store Algorithms
Both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store employ sophisticated algorithms to determine which applications receive prominent placement in search results and featured sections. While the exact workings of these algorithms remain proprietary, experienced Mobile App Development professionals understand their key ranking factors. These include keyword relevance in your app title and description, the quality and quantity of reviews, update frequency, crash rates, and uninstall frequencies. Perhaps most importantly, early user engagement metrics like retention rates significantly impact an app's algorithmic ranking. This creates something of a catch-22 for new applications: you need visibility to gain users, but you need engaged users to gain visibility. Breaking this cycle requires deliberate strategy rather than simply hoping for organic discovery.
App Store Optimization Fundamentals
Just as websites employ SEO techniques to improve search visibility, mobile applications require App Store Optimization (ASO) to stand out in crowded marketplaces. This begins with extensive keyword research to identify terms your potential users are searching for, balancing search volume against competition. These keywords should be strategically incorporated into your app title, subtitle, and description—with different approaches required for Apple's and Google's distinct algorithms. Visual assets are equally crucial: your icon must be instantly recognizable at small sizes, while screenshots and preview videos should clearly communicate your app's value proposition in seconds. A/B testing these elements can yield significant improvements in conversion rates, making ASO an ongoing process rather than a one-time effort in the Mobile App Development lifecycle.
Timing Your Launch for Maximum Impact
The timing of your app launch can significantly influence its initial traction. Releasing during major holidays may seem attractive due to increased device activations, but this also means competing with established apps investing heavily in seasonal marketing. Similarly, launching simultaneously with major platform updates (like new iOS or Android versions) can provide opportunities to leverage new features—but risks getting lost in the wave of apps doing the same. Industry-specific timing considerations also matter: financial apps might perform well in January when users set financial goals, while fitness applications often see spikes in the new year or before summer. The most strategic Mobile App Development teams coordinate their launch timing with their marketing efforts, ensuring all elements align for maximum visibility and adoption.
Pre-Launch Marketing and Community Building
The groundwork for a successful launch begins long before your application appears in stores. Building anticipation through pre-launch marketing creates an initial user base ready to download on day one—generating the early momentum that algorithms favor. This might include creating a compelling landing page to collect email addresses, establishing a social media presence that shares development milestones, or engaging with relevant online communities where potential users gather. Some developers successfully use beta testing programs not just for product refinement but as marketing tools, leveraging early users as advocates who spread word-of-mouth recommendations. The most sophisticated Mobile App Development strategies include creating shareable content that highlights unique features, establishing relationships with industry influencers, and developing a press kit that makes it easy for media outlets to cover your launch.
Pricing Strategy and Monetization Models
One of the most consequential decisions for any app launch is choosing the right monetization approach. The freemium model—offering basic functionality for free with premium features available via in-app purchase—dominates many categories due to its low barrier to entry and sustainable revenue potential. Subscription models have gained tremendous popularity, providing predictable revenue streams but requiring clear ongoing value to prevent cancellations. Ad-supported approaches work well for applications with high engagement time, while one-time purchase models remain viable primarily for specialized tools with clear professional value. Each approach creates different user expectations and affects both short-term download numbers and long-term financial sustainability. Finding the right balance requires understanding both user psychology and the competitive dynamics specific to your app category.
Launch Day Execution and Beyond
When launch day arrives, having a detailed operational plan prevents costly oversights. This includes coordinating your store listings going live with your marketing campaign activation, ensuring customer support channels are fully staffed, and having team members monitoring technical performance to address any unexpected issues quickly. The first 72 hours after launch represent a critical window when algorithms are particularly attentive to user signals like download velocity and retention metrics. Smart Mobile App Development teams prepare multiple promotional waves rather than exhausting all marketing efforts immediately, maintaining momentum through the crucial first weeks. This might include staggered press outreach, phased social media campaigns, launch promotions, and strategically timed feature announcements to keep the app in the conversation.
Responding to Early Feedback
No amount of testing can perfectly predict how real users will interact with your application in the wild. The ability to rapidly respond to early feedback represents a significant competitive advantage in the crowded app marketplace. This means not just monitoring reviews but analyzing what users actually do within your application through analytics platforms. Identifying and addressing critical bugs or usability issues within days rather than weeks can dramatically improve retention rates and review sentiment, creating positive algorithmic signals that boost visibility. The most responsive teams prepare for this phase by establishing clear prioritization frameworks to distinguish between critical issues requiring immediate attention and incremental improvements that can wait for future updates.
Building for the Long Term
While a strong launch creates critical early momentum, sustainable success in Mobile App Development requires planning beyond the initial release. Applications that maintain relevance over years rather than months typically follow a carefully structured update roadmap that balances bug fixes, performance improvements, and new feature development. Regular content refreshes keep users engaged, while seasonal promotions and limited-time events create reasons to return. Building community through responsive customer support, user-generated content, and direct engagement transforms passive users into advocates who recruit others through word-of-mouth. Perhaps most importantly, successful applications continuously evolve based on user data rather than assumptions, creating a virtuous cycle of improvement that maintains relevance even as market conditions change.
The journey from development to successful distribution represents one of the most challenging transitions in the Mobile App Development lifecycle. The technical excellence that creates a great product must be matched with marketplace savvy that helps it find its audience. By understanding the unique dynamics of app stores, preparing thoroughly for launch, and responding intelligently to early signals, developers can significantly improve their chances of breaking through the noise and connecting with the users their applications were designed to serve. In an ecosystem where the average smartphone owner uses less than a dozen apps regularly, this strategic approach to distribution isn't just nice to have—it's essential for transforming development investment into meaningful user adoption.
